Nardò Technical Center Turns 50, Showcases Future of Mobility with High-Speed Testing
Nardò Technical Center (NTC), the renowned automotive proving ground in Apulia, Italy, celebrated its 50th anniversary yesterday with a dynamic showcase that combined heritage, cutting-edge technology and a glimpse into the future of mobility. The event, held at NTC’s headquarters, drew automotive leaders, engineers and regional officials who witnessed live high-speed tests and demonstrations across the site’s sprawling 700 hectares.
The anniversary event featured a striking display of advanced vehicles tackling the legendary 12.6-kilometer high-speed ring. Throughout the day, visitors observed high-speed endurance runs, complex handling maneuvers and next-generation ADAS and autonomous systems in action. The program also included presentations on electric and digital innovations that underscored how NTC continues to evolve from a traditional test track into a comprehensive mobility development hub.
Founded in 1975 by Fiat, NTC revolutionized automotive testing with its circular high-speed ring—an engineering marvel that remains unique worldwide. Over the decades, it became a critical site for vehicle trials, setting multiple endurance and speed records that helped shape global automotive benchmarks.
In 2012, Porsche Group acquired NTC and integrated it into Porsche Engineering, its international technology and engineering arm. This move sparked a new era for NTC, with heavy investments in infrastructure, digital systems and facilities that bridged real and virtual development. Today, NTC’s test tracks are complemented by state-of-the-art labs, simulation systems and a dedicated software unit in nearby Lecce that advances digital testing, 5G connectivity and AI-driven mobility solutions.
Antonio Gratis, Managing Director of NTC, addressed guests during the celebration. He highlighted the center’s role not only as a testing site, but as a cradle of innovation. “This is not just a proving ground. It is a place where ideas take shape, where technology meets purpose, and where the future of intelligent, connected and safe mobility is being written,” he said.
A standout feature in recent years has been NTC’s rapid adaptation to electric mobility. In 2021, it transformed a legacy facility into a lithium-ion battery testing center, complete with powerful charging systems. Yesterday’s demonstrations included high-performance EV tests, reflecting the growing importance of electrification in NTC’s operations.
The relationship between NTC and Porsche is managed through Porsche Engineering, which operates the center for both the Porsche brand and a wide array of external automotive and tech clients. Over 90 global companies now rely on NTC’s facilities and expertise to test and refine everything from combustion and electric powertrains to automated driving software and next-generation connectivity solutions.
NTC’s impact also extends beyond automotive circles. It has become a key economic driver for Southern Italy, injecting roughly 20 million euros annually into the local economy. Its partnerships with universities and technical schools nurture talent and develop skills that benefit the broader Salento region. As the automotive world becomes increasingly digital, these collaborations also ensure a steady pipeline of experts ready to tackle future challenges.
During the anniversary, NTC underscored how it is preparing for tomorrow’s demands. The center revealed plans to further expand digital validation capabilities and integrate advanced AI-driven tools into its test programs. This will reinforce its role as a full-spectrum partner, able to offer manufacturers seamless transitions between physical trials and sophisticated simulations.
With over 200 highly specialized employees and a growing network of partners, NTC stands as a testament to how a regional proving ground can become a global technology hub. Yesterday’s event was more than a celebration of 50 years; it was a statement that NTC is geared up for the next fifty, ready to support an industry undergoing historic transformation.
