National Day: Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa Abort Planned Interviews

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa have informed the national press
that they are cancelling a series of interviews scheduled for later this week.

In a meeting with selected media outlets on Tuesday, explanations were given on why
royal couple decided to withdraw from the interviews because they simply “aren’t feeling
it.”

According to Sasha Baillie, head of the royal household, the couple was not comfortable
with the proposed interview format, which focused on reflecting on their 25 years on the
throne.

Journalists had prepared in-depth questions aimed at offering the public a retrospective
on the Grand Duke’s tenure as head of state, ahead of his planned abdication in
October in favour of his son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.

The press had also hoped to gain rare insights into the royal succession, including the
roles of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie, as well as
reflections on key events of the Grand Duke’s reign. These included the constitutional
crisis sparked by his refusal to sign a euthanasia law passed by parliament, a moment
that led to significant reforms, and his broader vision for the future of the Luxembourg
monarchy.
