Luxembourg’s Exam, 73% Pass Rate, Gender Gaps

Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education has released its much-anticipated final exam
results, offering a snapshot of academic performance across the nation’s secondary
schools and revealing slight shifts, emerging trends, and familiar disparities.

This year, 73% of the country’s 3,688 graduating secondary school students
successfully passed their final exams, a modest dip from last year’s 74% pass rate.
While 2,705 students are now eligible to graduate, 16% must return in September to
retake certain subjects. Meanwhile, 10% of candidates did not make the cut at all.

Performance diverged sharply depending on the academic path chosen. Students in the
classical secondary education track continued to outperform their peers, with an
impressive 83% pass rate. Only 6% failed, while 11% must sit for supplementary exams.
The general secondary stream told a different story: just 66% passed, 21% are heading
for make-up exams, and 13% failed entirely.

Gender disparities also emerged. In the classical stream, female students maintained a
slight edge, 84% of girls passed, compared to 81% of boys. But in the general stream,
the pattern flipped, with 68% of male students passing versus 65% of female students.
The Ministry singled out 108 students for “excellent” distinction, recognising outstanding
academic achievement amid a challenging year.

While the overall results signal relative stability, they also spotlight ongoing divides, by
stream, gender, and outcome, raising questions about how the education system will
evolve to close these gaps.
