German Engineer Launches Device Offering Internet Without Subscriptions

German telecommunications engineer Alexander Meyer has unveiled SmartWifi, a portable device that provides internet access without mobile subscriptions, SIM cards, or contracts.

The pocket-sized unit connects phones, laptops and other devices via Wi-Fi, automatically linking to the strongest available local network in more than 150 countries. It comes with 30GB of free data on first use and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.

Meyer said SmartWifi was developed to remove roaming charges and end reliance on network carriers. Users simply switch it on and connect, no cables, configuration or manual top-ups are required. The device uses a network-partner system to provide coverage without the need for traditional data plans.

Industry analysts say similar products often still require prepaid SIM cards or data bundles, but SmartWifi’s automatic access to multiple local networks marks a notable shift. The device is available online and priced at roughly the cost of a single month’s premium data plan in Europe.

Meyer, who has over 15 years’ experience with major European telecom firms, began working on the project in 2019. He says SmartWifi is the first in a planned series of tools designed to make internet access “affordable and available anywhere”.
