New Faces at the Helm of Three Luxembourg Municipalities
Luxembourg’s local political landscape marked a moment of renewal this week as newly appointed mayors and aldermen were formally sworn into office in the municipalities of Bech, Bettembourg and Esch-sur-Sûre. The ceremonies, held under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior, followed Grand-Ducal and ministerial decrees issued in early February and signal the official start of new leadership mandates at municipal level.
By Grand-Ducal Decree dated 4 February 2026, Max Pesch was appointed Mayor of Bech, Jean-Marie Jans Mayor of Bettembourg and Mireille Welter Mayor of Esch-sur-Sûre. These appointments reflect Luxembourg’s long-established system in which mayors are formally designated by the Grand Duke, following local elections and political agreements within municipal councils. The swearing-in ceremonies transform these appointments into full executive authority, enabling the mayors to assume responsibility for day-to-day administration, local policy direction and representation of their municipalities.
Alongside the mayoral appointments, several new aldermen were sworn in by ministerial decree on 6 February 2026. In Bech, Norbert Classen and Bibi Wintersdorf joined the municipal executive as aldermen, strengthening the leadership team tasked with managing local services, planning and community development. In Bettembourg, Alain Gillet was appointed alderman, while Jeannot Sanavia took on the same role in Esch-sur-Sûre. Aldermen play a key role in Luxembourg’s communal governance, supporting the mayor and sharing responsibility for specific policy areas such as infrastructure, social affairs or local economic development.
The ceremonies underscore the importance of municipalities in Luxembourg’s political system. While the country is small, its communes enjoy significant autonomy and are often the first point of contact between citizens and public authorities. Issues ranging from housing and mobility to cultural life and environmental management are increasingly shaped at local level, giving mayors and aldermen a central role in addressing residents’ everyday concerns.
For Bech, Bettembourg and Esch-sur-Sûre, the new leadership teams take office at a time when municipalities face growing pressure to balance development with sustainability, manage rising costs and respond to demographic change. The formal swearing-in marks not only a procedural milestone but also the beginning of a new phase of accountability, as local leaders are expected to translate electoral promises and policy priorities into concrete action.
The appointments were announced in an official press release from the Ministry of the Interior, reaffirming the state’s role in overseeing communal governance while highlighting the continued vitality of local democracy in the Grand Duchy.
