Red Alert Issued in Luxembourg as Heatwave Grips South and Urban Areas

Luxembourg’s Weather Risk Assessment Unit (CERI) has issued a red alert for today, warning of extreme heat between noon and 8 pm in the country’s south and main urban centres. According to MeteoLux forecasts, temperatures are expected to soar to between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, prompting urgent recommendations to safeguard health.

Authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated, drink at least 1.5 litres of water throughout the day and avoid outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours from 11 am to 9 pm. Windows, blinds and curtains should be kept closed during the day to block out heat, then opened at night to allow cooler air inside. People venturing outdoors are advised to cover their heads, wear light clothing and limit physical exertion.

The CERI also recommends spending time in cool or air-conditioned environments such as shopping centres or cinemas, and using fans or water sprays to reduce body temperature. Frequent showers or misters can help prevent overheating. Officials stressed the importance of checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbours to ensure they stay safe and cool.

This level of alert highlights serious health risks, especially for the elderly, young children and those with chronic illnesses. The CERI will reconvene tomorrow morning to evaluate the evolving situation and issue further updates as necessary.
