Luxembourg Issues Fire Risk Alert as Weekend Heatwave Looms

As temperatures in Luxembourg are set to soar, reaching 30°C on Saturday and
climbing to a sweltering 33°C on Sunday, the day before the National Day holiday,
authorities are stepping up efforts to prevent wildfires.

A coordinated public awareness campaign was launched on Friday, warning residents
of the heightened risk of vegetation and forest fires amid the hot, dry conditions. The
alert comes from a coalition of government ministries and agencies, under the umbrella
of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Experts from a dedicated working group on vegetation and forest fires have issued a set
of preventative measures, stressing that “small acts can stop big disasters.”
Among the key safety recommendations:

 Do not throw cigarette butts on the ground.
 Avoid lighting open fires.
 Only grill in approved areas and always have water nearby.
 Never dispose of hot barbecue embers in nature.
 Don’t drive or park on dry grass, as vehicle heat can ignite it.

Officials also reminded the public to keep emergency access routes clear at all times. In
the event of a fire, call 112 immediately, provide a precise location, ideally referencing
forest rescue point numbers and, if safe, help direct firefighters to the area.
With celebrations around the corner, authorities are urging everyone to stay alert and
act responsibly to protect the country’s forests and green spaces from fire.
