Crackdown on Distracted Driving Nets 579 Offenders in Luxembourg

A sweeping two-week police operation targeting distracted driving in Luxembourg has
uncovered a disturbing trend; hundreds of motorists are still glued to their phones behind the
wheel, despite clear risks and hefty penalties.

Between 16 and 29 June, law enforcement officers across the country issued 579 fines to drivers
caught using mobile phones while driving, a dangerous habit that cost each offender €250 and
four penalty points. In total, the campaign racked up €144,750 in fines and 2,316 penalty points.

The operation, aimed squarely at reducing road accidents caused by inattentive drivers, coincides
with new findings from the Luxembourg Motoring Association (ACL), which show that using a
mobile phone while driving increases the risk of an accident by a staggering 62%.
“Driver distraction remains one of the leading causes of road crashes,” police emphasized.
“Smartphones distract in every way, visually, physically, cognitively and even audibly.”
But mobile phone violations were just the tip of the iceberg. The crackdown also uncovered a
range of other serious infractions:

  • 260 motorists were fined for irregular vehicle documentation.
  • 52 drivers failed to produce valid driving licences.
  • 96 vehicles lacked up-to-date roadworthiness certificates.
  • 28 cars were found to be uninsured.
  • 64 vehicles did not have valid tax stickers.
  • One driver had no provisional licence, and two failed to present their training booklets.

The operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against dangerous driving habits in
Luxembourg. Authorities say similar campaigns will continue to ensure road safety and
accountability.
